Pattern play Crochet poncho by Novita and arm warmers in the story... Summers Bealtaine 2022 Aus12/10/2022 For a long time I had avoided the practicality of keeping warm with ponchos because most of the commercial bought variety just felt too flimsy for me and with not enough'structure' Going through the Novita patterns I saw this one as well as finger-less mitts with long cuff with the 7 Brother wool mix yarn they supply. I'm currently clean out my yarn stash so I jumped into this one with a thicker USA style yarn. The poncho and mittens are free patterns on the Novita sight and the poncho is simply referred to as Crochet Poncho Novita 7 Brothers. It is crochet to down in the round, before a ribbed collar is added with circular needles in needles half a size smaller than the crochet work. The garment is blocked and then finished with tassels on the bottom... Playing color...Using my stash I decided on this 4.5m USA style yarn in close to shades as the Novita original as I can, however I'm not sure with the end result. The silver is a little to dark for the desired effect of contrast, for my liking... I was considering the Paintbox yarn stash I have but I want a real heavy garment that drapes, hugs and stays put like a security blanket/hug... As for the mittens I will also use the same chunky yarn but with both garments I will have to play with hook size and needle for the right gauge. Colors;
The ripping back that doesn't end...Okay things haven't been swimming as I hoped. I originally used the recommended crochet hook of 5.00 mm but by the time I got to 7 rows to the end I had reach what I assumed would be the right length so this hook and gauge was way to big for my intention. The Yoke was also on the bit to wide side for I really like this area to have more structure and sit up instead of endlessly weighing and drooping down. The yarn from my stash definitely has a large part to play in this but I'm on a mission to get through all my old yarn to make way for new. In my 2nd attempt I got to the end to realize even at 4.5 mm its still on the too large ballpark and I also felt that I was right about not having enough contrast in my color choice. After doing the work in 4.00 mm I decided to go 3.00 mm after seeing the result of this yarn in an even smaller gage on the Purl Soho Watchmans cap... In closing...I do like the color combination but to wear I would of liked the silver to be lighter and brighter and the purple to be closer in tone to pink. So ripped back again after casting on in 4.00 mm work I have commenced with a 3.00 mm needle and will do the same for knitted collar and the finger less mittens using the recommended double pointed needles. Stay tuned for my color switch out and future time saver swatches I'm making to see the colors before committing them to garment... Anyway, thank-you for keeping up with me on my journey There's more coming on the horizon, Stay tuned... Thankyou for reading...
